Chapter Twenty-Six

Digby lay with the corpse of a level thirteen fighter on top of one of his legs.

The memory of his death retreated to the back of his mind after answering the question that had plagued him since waking up eight hundred years in the future. He had a shard of the Heretic Seed nailed through his heart.

That was it.

He’d made the mistake of casting regenerate back there in that boat, without having the forethought to remove the shard first. With that, he’d healed the wound and trapped the obstruction inside his heart where it was sure to kill him.

That was how he’d died.

He let out a mirthless laugh at his own stupidity. Granted, he had also been cursed, so odds were he wouldn’t have survived that night, anyway. As for how his connection with the Heretic Seed was still stable, he had no idea. The thing had been destroyed eight hundred years ago; he was sure of it. The Seed had exploded before his very eyes. Perhaps he would figure it out in time, but right now, he had bigger problems.

Digby pushed the fighter’s corpse off his legs, rolling it to the side to lay next to the body of the mage who’d had their head blown clean off by a grenade.

“Sorry, you don’t get to be one of my minions.” He chuckled to himself, then cast a Necrotic Regeneration to regain the use of his legs. Afterward, he looked back through the Heretic Seed’s messages to see what he’d missed.
